Stage 4: Tyndrum to Kingshouse

Tyndrum to Kingshouse

(19 miles / 10 - 12 hours)

From Tyndrum the Way proceeds North in the same direction as the A82 towards Bridge of Orchy and the branch line from Upper Tyndrum train station.  The start of the Way is near the Green Welly shop. The Way proceeds along two valleys for the most part following the train line except when the train line has to go further round the valley to cross a viaduct at the intersection of the two valleys. The path is good but is exposed and you'll probably notice that in poor weather.  After about 7 miles you reach Bridge of Orchy - a very small settlement with its own railway station. The Bridge of Orchy Hotel is a good place to stop either for some refreshments or for the night.

From Bridge of Orchy you proceed over the River Orchy, up and over the hill directly behind it. The climb itself is not too bad. When you eventually reach the top you get excellent views (assuming good weather) of the glen you walked down from Tyndrum to Bridge Of Orchy and the moor (to the left beyond Loch Tulla) upon which you will proceed to Kingshouse once you pass Inveroran.  You arrive in Inveroran fairly soon after you set off from Bridge of Orchy. There is only one place here - the Inveroran Hotel and it is a welcome place to stop for a break or for the night.

From Inveroran the Way goes around the western edge of Loch Tulla and proceeds upwards into the moor - probably the most barren and isolated part of the Way - it is a high plateau upon which the route proceeds along an Old Military road that in the 18th and 19th centuries was used by cattle drovers to walk their livestock to market.  The views once again are spectacular and even in mid-summer you can sometimes still see snow on the tops of the mountains.  The final part of the route to Kingshouse descends down into Glencoe but don't be fooled - although you can see the Kingshouse Hotel when you clear the brow of the hill at the end of the plateau it will take you quite a long time to actually reach the bar or your resting point for the evening! On the way down you pass the ski lift (used in the winter months only) before crossing the main road and arriving at the famous Kingshouse Hotel (which is almost the only place here save a few cottages).  The Kingshouse provides accommodation, food and refreshments and its bar is always full of walkers and mountaineers telling stories about their days. Camping may also be possible outside the hotel near the river.
